Mel Gibson has admitted "romanticising" the lead character in Braveheart.

Mel directed and produced the 1995 film, and also played the lead character Wallace - the legendary Scot landowner who fought for Scottish independence.

Now the Oscar-winning film is being released on Blu-Ray, Mel admitted he changed Wallace's character, saying: "It wasn't necessarily authentic - some of the stuff I read about that particular character he wasn't as nice as we saw him up there."

He continued: "We kinda romanticised him a bit. But you have to make it so it is cinematically acceptable. Actually he was a monster. He was always burning people's villages and stuff down. He had his faults, I'm sure he was a very hard guy. But we kinda shifted the balance a bit because someone has to be the good guy."
